I think these lovely old carved swallows would be fantastic punched directly into the wall--in a swarm

with cutout niches in the bottom piece into which the cross bars neatly fit

which are now lost (though their leather harnesses remain and are fully in tact)

this copy very much worn and with a cracked spine
